Pi

"Pi, 3.1416, is irrational in a magical, beautiful sense.
It can't be cropped off and fit into a box. The closer you look at pi, the more you see, forever.
To be transcendent and irrational is to always have a few more digits to spare, to demand that you not be rounded off and filed away. To be human." Seth Godin

Hunters of wisdom

Para leer en Español AQUI

2013 was a very intense year for me. It was tough and unpredictable.
My roommates and myself we survived a zombie attack (literally) and we had to move fast.
I dealt with a tsunami of emotions from dearest friends and dance partners going away,
death of loved ones. An injury that I had for 3 years exploded leaving me in crutches
(when I had to be carrying boxes) and closing the year of the serpent with three weeks of fever.
However, I had very beautiful experiences as well.

I didn't write. I didn't dance. Didn't paint as much as I normally do. I was simply not expecting this result.
I spent most of my time dealing with mundane transactions of basic survival.
We all have had this kind of year where all the planets are not in our favor. We learn to be small.
There was a point where I frankly confessed: "I won't fight".
So ready I was to go towards my mother's arms. Take shelter in her casita (house) in the blue Mexican caribbean. Just wanted to be hugged and go swim with my little brother and drink a coconut in the white sand. Quit to the whole institution of the United Scares of America
:)

The Mahabharata is said to be the longest poem in the world. About one hundred thousand verses.
The Bhagavad Gita is part of this epic poem. Is a conversation between Arjuna and Sri Krishna in the middle of the battle field, in the middle of the heat of the commencement of war.  The only way to understand the tension where this conversation happened is imagining the angry shouting of warriors, the nervous neighing of horses and elephants. Amidst hate and fear! and this unreasonable amount of adrenaline sounding in the ears...  imagine yourself needing to fight like a mad man! No time for doubt.
This dialogue is what is known as the Bhagavad-Gita and the only way to read it is sweating.

... and just there in the peak of horror: Arjuna (the foe-consuming, the never-slothful) had spoken to Sri Krishna (the ruler of the senses):
- "I will not fight"
and was silent.
Sri Krishna smiled and said:
"What is this weakness? It is beneath you.
Is it for nothing men call you the foe-consumer?
Shake off this cowardice, Arjuna. Stand up!"

There is so much beauty and goodness to drink from this epic poem, I will share only two concepts that became my crutches:

"If you refuse to fight this righteous war, you will be turning aside from your duty."

And for the mother who are about to give birth:  fight.
And for the sick of cancer who are about to get chemotherapy: fight
And for the entrepreneur, the businessman, the writer, the cook, the teacher, the designer, the dancer, the monastic, the engineer
or just for a daily smile, a positive state of mind... therefore we must go into battle.

My understanding of this poem is that we are not -the nature of the duty-. Our true nature is "That inmost reality which is indestructible". The rest is impermanent.
All these collections of duties are always changing in the flow of our life. They are the platforms, the catalyst to achieve a higher state of mind (wisdom).
We are luminous beings working in a series of mundane duties in the sake of wisdom.
We are hunters of wisdom:

Be even-tempered in success and failure.

I'm writing now from a victorious position,
from where calm and solidity make my new home cozy-warm, secure.
It is more easy to talk about "detachment and even-tempered". I wish I had had more wisdom in 2013.
I know that there will be more 2013 (hopefully not soon), there will be more death, farewells, fear, zombies and my body is getting old every nanosecond. This is unavoidable.
Learning to take things serenely and keep up with the fight, unattached, is hunting wisdom.

"Stand up now Arjuna and resolve to fight.
 Realize that pleasure and pain,
gain and loss, victory and defeat are all one and the same.
You should not grieve for what is unavoidable.
A serene spirit accepts pleasure and pain with an even mind and is unmoved by either,
therefore you must fight!"

For the victory of 2013 I want to thank:
Andrew Wolf, Jason  Ling, James Beatty, Royita, Nadia, Franelita, Iwen, Janett, Dale
(long list of books and holly virtuous beings)
and the Bhagavad Gita.

I dedicate this post to Mayra Enriquez

Arjuna and Krishna and no moustache

In almost all the paintings that I've found of Krishna and Arjuna, I always
ALWAYS find Arjuna with a fancy moustache.
I can't imagine Arjuna with a moustache, specially after all the epic journey he lived.
So I shaved Arjuna.
I think either he had an abundant beard or anything at all. No time for fancy moustaches in such intense life.

It is very difficult to find a Bhagavad-Gita book with a  good and pure translation. Normally all the books are only but thick interpretations.
I recommend the Bhagavad Gita translated by Swami Prabhavananda and Christopher Isherwood with a nice introduction by Aldous Huxley

Be free

Appearances are delusion; do not indulge in ordinariness.

Food is merely to sustain your life force; do not grovel for food.

Wealth is illusory; do not indulge in craving.

Clothes are to protect you from cold; do not indulge in opulent fashions.

Equality is nondual; do not indulge in intimate companions.

Be free from preference to country; do not indulge in a homeland

Make your dwelling an empty cave; do not indulge in monastic life.

Do your practice in solitude; do not indulge in social gatherings.

Be detached and free from clinging; do not indulge in attachment.

Be a self liberated yogi, do not indulge in charlatanism.

I, Padmakara, am now taking leave,
Whether you live in the present or will appear in the future,
Tibetan yogis of future generations, keep this in your hearts.

Thus he gave instructions.

From the book "The lotus- Born.  The life story of Padmasambhava"

ok still awake

The silence is deep and the absence of bigger sounds transform the tiny noises into
intense whizz... buzzing.
The birds are sleeping, cozy in their unreachable homes.
The humans are  tired and blusterless.
The cats and the raccoons are kings of the dark silence,
and the lonely princes and princesses still awake
looking around --typing -- poems
sensations
sweet smells
waiting for
prophecies
and happy endings
been fulfilled.

My birthday's wish

This Saturday 1st March is going to be the last birthday that I will celebrate.
I arrived to the age where it's enough, no need to keep counting the years. I've been waiting for so long the peace of antiquity. I welcome wrinkles and silver hair with dignity and hope for wisdom.
:)
I thought many ways on how to celebrate this birthday and I thought a lot about the wish that I was going to ask for.
I'm going to celebrate my birthday at the gorgeous Buddhist Temple of Hua Zang Si in San Francisco, where I intend to prepare some holy burritos. If you live close by San Francisco, please come see me, I'll be there from 11am to 5pm. If you would like to eat a burrito, please let me know so I can have it ready. The temple's time for lunch is at noon (12:00p). At 1:00p I will stop my burrito crusade out of respect for the Temple's rules.

My wish:
From the bottom of my heart I wish YOU to ask a wish.
Please ask for a wish, and please think big.
For example, I had the big wish that this terrible drug leader "el Chapo Guzman" were captured, and three days ago finally they got him!, I know is not the most romantic wish, but it became true.

It is my deepest intention that whatever hurt you, any worry, problem, fear, sickness, difficulty, turbidity...may anything that distress your happiness disappear.
If you need good luck for your exams, money for a business, good energy for a trip, or love for your marriage or future marriage; may all the good luck, all the money, all the energy, all the love and health be with you.

May your happiness boost
May your energy increases and jump and run. Swim, go have long long days
May your heart be flooded with compassion and forgive that old old old resentment
May you find gold and pearls in a corner of your closet
May you feel beautiful and act beautifully
May a magic umbrella appear in a rainy day
May you achieve a holy state in your meditation
May the peace in Syria, Egypt, Sudan, Central Africa, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Ukraine and beyond... be absolute and abundant
May the Christians fall in love with Muslims and Muslims fall in love with Christians and may we all become Buddhist!
(allright.. I stop here)
oh one more...
may all your projects come true and may you wake up been hugged by a baby koala

On being small

Para leer en español AQUI

I've learned that most of the time when we get into troubles, it's due to
the subconscious search of needing recognition and the habit of finding
pleasure in thinking that we are "better" or "superior" to our neighbors,
brothers, colleagues or whatever we can compare ourselves to.
This silent search to be "superior to others" is one of the causes of
taking things very personally--resulting in our own suffering and in
generally making others suffer.

It is true that a master degree, a phd, a recognition from a great school,
work, president or guru and having a lot of money will make our life better
and easier, but it won't make our hearts more sincere, pure and
compassionate.

The most powerful work of the heart is based in the small job of its humility.
Basically, the main message on this thought is that WE ARE NOT
BETTER, BIGGER or SMALLER than anyone else or anything else. Underneath all
this (flesh and bones) surface stuff, we are made of the same original matter;
we are all floating in this great mystery, and we are all equal cells.

Only by accepting and embracing our smallness do we become a great whole;
it is easier to walk as tribe of humankind. It's the fundamental pillar to create happiness at work. And it's the best antidote against feeling inferior... How?
if we are already small. Because feeling tiny against the sun is the greatest feeling.
I wish you a beautiful (and simple) protection, a shield against the firey
flames of grandiosity, superiority, pomposity, pretense, and all kind
of paraphernalia. This shield will protect us and make us reflect on how to
aspire for big dreams, great goals, wonderful state of minds without
falling into the silent belief that we are "better than..."

Such a huge work to be small...

Happy happy new year!
This year is the year of the horse in the chinese calendar.
I am horse, but... since I'm in my "campaign on being small"
I found prudent to become a pony.
:)
sending you all my light

A small seed

A small seed.

A small drawing made in my phone (with one finger). I used to apps: Sketchbook and ASKetch.

enjoying the process of the smallness grow.

What is the smallest unit of measure?

The smallest unit of distance that we can actually measure is an Angstrom – this is 10 million times smaller than a millimetre. There are even smaller units than this, a femtometer (also known as a fermi) is 100,000 times smaller, and is about the size of an atomic nucleus.

Of course, distance is not the only unit of measurement. It is thought that a unit known as Planck time is the smallest measurement of time that will be possible. It is roughly equal to 10^−43 seconds.

Perfection of Giving

One's motivation for giving to others is at least as important as what is given.

What is right or wrong motivation?
These include being shamed or intimidated into giving; giving to receive a favor; giving to feel good about yourself. These are impure motivations.

The Buddha taught that when we give to others, we give without expectation of reward. We give without attaching to either the gift or the recipient.

We practice giving to release greed and self-clinging.

At the same time, there is no giving without receiving. In a sense, giving and receiving are one. If giving is "good," then receiving is equally good..

Batman, Don Juan, Bears and make the jump.

Batman was desperate, injured and captured in an underground prison.
The only way to get out of this hole was by climbing the walls, by securing
himself with a rope, and trying to make an impossible jump to freedom.
He already failed this jump twice.

An old man next to his cell told him (while Batman was doing push ups):
-“The lead to freedom is not about strength. You do not fear death,
you think this makes you strong, but it makes you weak”

Batman answered: -” I’m not afraid, I’m angry”

The old man continued: “How can you –be- faster than possible, fight longer
than possible without the most powerful impulse of the spirit? The fear of death.
Do the climb without the rope and fear will find you again.”
Did Batman jump with or without the rope.? Here

Don Juan Matus was trying to teach Carlos, his apprentice, about power and
the warrior's way, the difference between believing and having to believe.
“A warrior doesn't believe, a warrior has to believe." Don Juan explained,
-“Power is showing you that death is the indispensable ingredient in
having to believe. Without the awareness of death everything is ordinary, trivial.
It is only because death is stalking us that the world is an unfathomable mystery.”

Don Juan taught that we luminous beings should live just as if death is few steps behind,
walking by our left side.  To be able to sustain this way is impeccability,
and that you have done everything possible to be worthy of knowledge and power".

For this year 2013 I wish you a herd of angry bears behind you and may
this running for your life make you jump indescribably mighty high.
:)

I thought a lot about writing about the “death topic” that has been in my
mind lately. So funny that we make plans and schedule our life as immortals
when we are surrounded by volatile impermanence.

I’m not saying to get stressed (or paranoia) or quit your job and duties.
Yes!  Have fun, but may the presence of the mystery make you wonder
and question existence and find new edges.
Yes! work hard but don’t let the world that your reason wants to sustain
be a world created by inviolable worldly concepts.

Now forgive deeply and instantly and irreversibly and now. Make sure to
send that book to your Dad as soon as now. Make the jump without the
attachment of the rope of fame, rope of gain, rope of anger, rope of
 hatred… seizing.

I’m sorry if you find me a little weird this year but… I have an angry
bear running behind my mortal derriere. Good luck with your bears and happy 2013.

I want to dedicate this post to my Dad, Rodolfo (1930-2012).

12/ 21/ 2012

I told him that sometimes I thought I knew, but that most of the time I had no self-confidence.

"I'm afraid that you are confusing issues," he said. "The self-confidence of the warrior is not
the self-confidence of the average man. The average man seeks certainty in the eyes of the
onlooker and calls that self-confidence. The warrior seeks impeccability in his own eyes and
calls that humbleness. The average man is hooked to his fellow men, while the warrior is hooked
only to himself. Perhaps you are chasing rainbows. You're after the self-confidence of the
average man, when you should be after the humbleness of a warrior. The difference between the
two is remarkable. Self-confidence entails knowing something for sure; humbleness entails being
impeccable in one's actions and feelings."

"I've been trying to live in accordance with your suggestions," I said. "I may not be the best,
but I'm the best of myself. Is that impeccability?"

"No. You must do better than that. You must push yourself beyond your limits, all the time."

"But that would be insane, don Juan. No one can do that."

"There are lots of things that you do now which would have seemed insane to you ten years
ago. Those things themselves did not change, but your idea of yourself changed; what was
impossible before is perfectly possible now and perhaps your total success in changing yourself
is only a matter of time. In this affair the only possible course that a warrior has is to act
consistently and without reservations. You know enough of the warrior's way to act accordingly,
but your old habits and routines stand in your way."

"I'm going to utter perhaps the greatest piece of knowledge anyone can voice," he said. "Let
me see what you can do with it.
"Do you know that at this very moment you are surrounded by eternity? And do you know
that you can use that eternity, if you so desire?"

Feeling the most beautiful

" Are our actions helping others find a way to feel freer, more dignified and more beautiful?"
I read this question from an article wrote  by Jacqueline Novogratz : What Are You Doing When You Feel Most Beautiful?

This year we worked very hard creating "A memory from the future / Un recuerdo del futuro" and instead of going
to hospitals, refugees, senior centers, youth shelters... we are bringing them to our home at studio 8 berkeley.
And we feel the most beautiful. I want to dedicate all this beauty to my father Rodolfo

Yoga, Eight Million Suns and fart fart...

One day, Su Dongpo felt inspired and wrote this poem:

I bow my head to the heaven within heaven
Hairline rays illuminating the universe
The eight winds cannot move me
Sitting still upon the purple golden lotus

Impressed by his conquering of the "eight winds" (praise, ridicule, honor, disgrace, gain, loss, pleasure, and misery), Su Dongpo sent a servant to deliver his poem across the river to Zen master Foyin. He felt certain that his friend would be just as impressed. When Foyin read the poem, he wrote "fart, fart" on the manuscript and had it returned to Su Dongpo.

Su Dongpo was shocked when he saw what the Zen master had written. Unaware of his own anger, he said, "What is the meaning of this? I can't believe he could be so rude and insulting!" Full of indignation, Su Dongpo ordered a boat to ferry him to the other shore as quickly as possible. Once there, he jumped off and charged into the temple. He wanted to find Foyin and demand an apology. He found Foyin's door closed. On the door was a note, upon which was written:

"The eight winds cannot move me
But one fart blows me across the river."

Dear family, friends and masters,

I started doing Yoga 19 years ago and finally (F I N A L L Y) I found my precious teachers, the technique and the time to join the parade of those who spread the benefits of experiencing Yoga.

I'm starting a Yoga class where I'll put into practice my lessons on how to gain strength, stretch, alignment, and to listen to the body, the heart and eight million chakras.
:)
Please feel free to invite your roommate, your schoolmates, your soul mate... your cousins, your grandma's pedicurist, your business partner,
allies and enemies:
Every 2nd and 4th Saturday of the month from 10am to 11:30am @ 8th St. Studio (2525 Eighth St., Berkeley, CA, 94710)

(sorry but crocodiles, piranhas, grenades or weapons of mass destruction are not allowed)

I'm starting this Saturday 22*.  No fee for the class till March, but donations are always accepted.

May I become a wonderful (humble) Yoga Instructor
and may the light from Eight million suns protect me from doubt.

don't forget to bring your body, we'll need it.

from the Future... this weekend

And so
It has taken me
all of sixty years
to understand that water is the finest drink
and bread the most delicious food
and that art is worthless
unless it plants
a measure of splendor in people's heart.

Un recuerdo del futuro: my first book. A poetry show and LUZ for MEXICO

I was driving when I felt it coming. México.

The Mexican goverment together with the owners of mega-ultra rich companies -monopolios- and the narcotic leaders, even if they have all the money, all the power...they want more. More and more, y más y más... y más, they want more money and more power and more more! Lies and lies...fraud, corruption, primitive beheavior. -How can we not get upset, infected by repulsion, while surrounded by this eternity of lies?- They want more, there will be not enough for these unevolved and powerful people, there is no end to their greed!
How can I be so deeply affected by this? .- Where are all these years of Buddhist cultivation and compassion? I don't want to feel this in my heart.
I didn’t fully notice how I ended up in a Bank of America parking lot hugging the car's steering wheel and crying so mightily. I think that when one has the chance to cry from the guts there is really nothing left but a big smile and peace. We will survive.

:)
This is Mexico marching in unity.
Mexico is living very hard times, but things are very clear. Yes, it is a dark time: freaking-frightening-terrorizing-frustrating-alarming fraudulent OBSCURE. It is so dark that people need to lift their own lights to see. Mexico is living a wonderful awakening of goodwill. A memory from the future is telling me that new generations are sewing a better present.

I will support all the good citizens movements, walks, Facebook tags, twitters, festivals, articles, conferences...whatever brings consciousness and unity without provoking ANY violence at all. I don’t believe in “revolutions” but I do believe we must stand together like one being. I believe we must be good-honest-kind people and behave uprightly, generating good energy, avoiding violence. Donate, adopt an orphan, open a library, teach someone to read who is far away from your “social level," support the single woman and widows and old people. Work hard. RESIST ADDICTIONS. Do good. Inspire goodness. Do good. Do good. DO GOOD and keep doing good-ness...
yes
oh yeah YO SOY 132!!!!
:D
Viva el buen México y que se retiren los que no tienen alma ni fondo.

I forgot to share with you that in the month of May I don’t know how this national dance magazine found us. They dedicated four pages to us. A beautiful article written by Ann Murphy (I think that Ann really captured the essence of our mission). Click HERE to read it.

 Aquí a poetry book.

A recollection of poems, paintings and sculpture created and inspired by different places where I have lived: Cocoyoc, Tepoztlán, Mexico City, France and New York. I was planning to release this book this summer, but the political (and spiritual) situation in Mexico is critical. All my friends and artistic community have had their energy focused on such INCREDIBLE social phenomenon that we all need to calm down. The book will be for free, and I will release it in the fall.

The good news is that we, Ballet de la Compasión/The Tea Dancers, made an unusual and curious show inspired by the poems and paintings of this book, and we are going to participate in the Santa Cruz Fringe Festival. Five nights of bilingual thoughts, aerial dance, video poetry and live painting at the 418 Project theater.
We start next Tuesday 14. And in August 11 and 12 we'll be in Berkeley @ 8th St. Studio.
As usual creating a positive intention on stage. A forty-five minute show. I am so excited! We are dancing music of Kristine Barret and Dan Wool Wow! thank you to Gisela Pérez, Christopher Howard, Mayra Enriquez and Roya Arasteh who made this posible.

Click HERE to check our schedule. We start next Tuesday. Buy your tickets AQUI.

And here a video with the art from the book and show.
I am waiting as long as I can to stop my Bcc and start an email newsletter. I don't like newsletters; I think most of them become impersonal and we start to write more "guarded," but I know that this is the protocol in these "modern times.".Everybody that is receiving this email is very important to me. I know you and somehow you have touched my life or inspired me or caused me curiosity.

If you want me to remove your email from this list, let me know.

Thank you again for being part of my experience on this planet
and may we all be free from the sense of ego,
free from fear, free from anger, free from the things of desire.

Mexican elections TOMORROW

This is a collection of photos (that deeply impressed me)  from internet and Facebook. I'm goin to write this blog in Spanglish so everybody can understand.

Aqui esta Andres Manuel López Obrador. This photo says a lot. Rain or shine he is doing his job. He is not perfect, he is human, full with mistakes, but this is the candidate that people with COMMON SENSE want as a presidente.

it's amazing that from all the candidate that we have, you almost can't find picture like this. Andres Manuel López Obrador ---> AMLO has been in touched with the very poor.

This is his "gabinete" the team that will govern (hopefully),
please read the bios of these people aqui

amazing people like:
Juan Ramón de la Fuente Ramírez
Marcelo Ebrard Casaubon
Elena Poniatowska Amor....
just to mention algunos cuantos.

GOOD people likes AMLO

and AMLO is able to fill the Mexico City's Civic Center with a million people or more
 en el cierre de campaña.

A new pacifist students movement was formed, called "yo soy #132", AMAZING. They have done great things trying to informed people about the manipulation of the corporate media, and how incompetent IFE
(the electoral "thing" that is in charge of Mexican elections) and how possible (again) we can suffer a FRAUD if we do not take conscious actions.  DESPIERTA MEXICO

<-----"yo soy #132" has great support!

We all know mexican t.v. needs to be punished and ignored untill they can learn to say: LA VERDAD

This happy guy it's the candidate from the political party called PRI wich are a bunch of greedy people and who have been stealing elections, creating chaos, insecurity...an endless list of calamities and ... sad sad very sad story.

This happy guy: Enrique Peña Nieto has a very VERY but very bad reputation
(we still do not understand how people can vote for him?)

People  (I'm talking about the people with common sense) in general do not like Enrique Peña Nieto.
People have organized huge gatherings and walks against EPN. They have even almost fill the main Mexico City's stadium in his desperation to show "to those in power" that WE really don't want him (it's not a joke).

Proves and more proves of how PRI and Enrique Peña Nieto are starting their fraudulent FRAUD.
Fabricating false electoral "official" votes in their favor
(we still do not understand how people can vote for him?)

Oh! another walk against Enrique Peña Nieto. .. in fact this is the 4th massive manifestation.

This is a package full with rice, oil, beans, a $200 bill, and more food together with Enrique Peña Nieto's photos and publicity. This is how PRI, the right political wing is used to buy very poor people's vote.
Can you believe it? they use hungry people to win, and then what do they do for them? They do nothing, they dont' care
..hmmm this happen every six years :(

<----This sweet lady is holding a sign that says:
"My future is more important than $500 pesos and a stupid bag of food"
Of course she is expressing herself in a more passionate way.

The movement "yo soy #132" organized a wonderful debate with the candidates, and guess what? Enrique Peña Nieto didn't go. Can you see the empty chair?
If he is scare of a bunch of students... what is he going to do against the so mighty narcotic mafia?

This is one of the many signs (big signs that you can find around Mexican cities and Facebook) from a good Mexican bookstore called: "Librerias Gandhi".  They are desperately trying to wake up people to do not forget our history of violence and poverty and to think twice before voting for Enrique Peña Nieto.

This is a letter directed to the "thing" we have as a Instituto Federal Electoral.
They are in charged of counting votes. They are most definitely a bunch of ... not very good Mexicans.

This is a sign that says: "Let's avoid a tragedy: No running, No yelling, No pushing, No voting for Enrique Peña Nieto"

Let's vote for AMLO
and this is one his many videos with new projects for Mexico

We, people, are the change not the politicians.

and:

I love this little guy... ha haaa haa!

I will be (always)  amiga of my friends.
